This week I received the final draft of the vocals from Vin. They sound really good. He is very talented and they are a high quality recording from a technical standpoint. He sent over the file and at first I had an issue getting the file to open. There is a great program called Audacity which can open and edit a lot of different types of files that you may not be able to open in other programs, in my case Windows Media Player or FL Studio. Once I got the file into Audacity I realized it was several different .wav files, include two stereo channels, a mono channel, a channel with reverb, among others. I went for the mono channel as it didn't have any effects and working with mono vocals is common if not the norm. I exported it to .wav and sent the vocals to Josh, the co-producer on the project. I am now waiting to hear back from him with what he came up with to improve on my ideas and rough draft.
My research this week focused on improving the sound design of my synths used in the song. I read through the articles "KOAN Sound on Sound Design" and "Building Custom Synth Sounds Tutorial" which I have bookmarked on Diigo in order to be able to look over them again in the future. Something helpful I read in the "KOAN" article, which is an interview with successful electronic artist KOAN Sound, is that they like to think of the sound design of a synth in three parts: lows, mids and highs. As I continue to work on this project in the future I will continue to incorporate new knowledge I am learning through my research.
Once I hear back from Josh I will figure out what mastering to use. He may do it himself, I may find a friend to do it, or I might pay someone $20-$30 to give it a mastering.
