This week I received a message from my collaboration partner Josh, containing a clip of an updated version of our song. It basically is still my same songwriting with some different synths, editing, mixing, and sound design, basically, the kind of changes I had hoped for. There are a few aspects I would like to see changed as the project progresses. First, I would like to see the vocals mixed differently. Right now they are a bit distorted in some parts and have an effect that I do not necessarily think should stay for the final version of the song. The second issue I would like to fixed is the piano in the breakdown. It is actually just the piano part I recorded without much change. First, I think it needs some of the mids and highs EQ'd out in order to make more space for the vocals, the most important aspect of the breakdown. Second, I think that the piano part should use a different virtual piano synth. The one I used is not the highest quality, nor is the sound design as high quality as it should be. I would consider fixing these aspects to be the biggest challenges moving forward, as well as the main chances for "failure" in the project.
This week my focus has been on researching piano mixing as I want to improve the piano in the breakdown. Two resources I discovered for this are: Article 1 and Article 2 . These resources are on the technical side, but that is what sound design and mixing are, technical disciplines. There is an art to it as well of course, but there is a lot of science to it as well.
The most fun I had with this project this week was getting to hear the progress Josh made on the track. I am really excited about where the song has come, and look forward to getting it finished. Here is a clip of where the song is at this point:
